Getting Started with TVO ILC Is Easy

On this page, we outline everything you need to know to take the next step towards your education and career goals. Whether you are young or established; applying with a clear education goal or figuring it out as you go; our objective right now is to explain the TVO ILC application process so you know exactly what to expect and feel confident in starting your application.

To prepare, simply identify whether you want to apply to TVO ILC to take individual courses or a full high school diploma. Then, review our detailed instructions and get your supporting documents ready. If you have done the preparation and are all set, it’s time to start your application.

To prepare, simply identify whether you want to apply to TVO ILC to take individual courses or a full high school diploma. Then, review our detailed instructions and get your supporting documents ready. If you have done the preparation and are all set, it’s time to start your application.

What are you applying for?

Are you taking a TVO ILC course as a stand-alone credit (or one of a small number of stand-alone credits) with a goal to cover mandatory prerequisite credits, upgrade marks, or address a personal interest? Complete these 5 simple steps and you’ll be ready to start your course(s) and move towards your chosen goals.

Eligibility

You must be at least 14 years of age or will be turning 14 by December 31 of this school year (i.e., anyone born in 2010 or earlier).

Your are not currently enrolled in a high school in Ontario, Canada. If you are currently enrolled, please contact your Guidance Counsellor at your high school about enrolling with ILC.

Note: If you've applied to TVO ILC or taken a course with us in the past, you do not need to re-enroll. Please login to the TVO ILC Portal to continue your application or purchase additional courses.

Steps to apply

Choose your course(s)

Go to the Explore Courses page. Browse courses. Select one or more you are interested in.

Note of Exception: If you are a homeschooler, you must apply first. Courses are chosen after your application is approved. Please skip this step and immediately proceed to step 2.

Pay your fee(s)

At TVO ILC, course fees are partially subsidized for most Ontario residents. The $40 per course administrative fee covers the cost for ILC to process your application. Accepted payment methods are VISA, MasterCard, American Express, Debit and Paypal.

Confirm your student information and upload the documents needed

Once your payment is successful, you will receive access to the TVO ILC Portal to confirm your details and upload your personal and educational documentation to support your application.

Please note:

  • All government issued ID must be valid and not expired
  • Utility Bills/Lease Agreements and Bank Statements must be current (within the last 3 months)
  • All required documents should be uploaded into the student portal directly
Mandatory documents for all applicants:


1. Proof of Ontario Residency

Provide one of the following:

  • Ontario driver's licence
  • Photo identification card
  • Utility bill
  • Lease or rental agreement
  • Bank statement

Please note: For students under 18 years of age, we will accept documentation from the parent or guardian who will sign the application.

2. Proof of Canadian Citizenship

Provide one of the following:

  • Canadian birth certificate
  • Canadian passport
  • Canadian citizenship certificate
  • Permanent residency card
  • Immigration Canada document indicating current refugee or landed immigrant status
Additional documents

Applicants 14-20 years of age
  • Academic Records or Transcripts
    Provide at least one of the following:

  • Ontario Student Transcript (OST)
  • Secondary School Transcript from another province or country
  • Evidence of Learning (for home-schooled students)
  • Out of School Proof
    Students ages 18-19 must also provide one of the following:

  • Date of Leaving Letter (this letter should be provided by your last school of attendance.)
  • Students under 18 years of age and/or homeschooled students:

  • Prior to applying, you must complete the “Letter Indicating Notification of Intent to Provide Home Schooling”  (Appendix B) (Annexe B) and submit it to your school board. This does not need to be submitted to TVO ILC.
  • The school board will then provide you with a “Letter in Response to Parent’s Notification”.
  • This letter from your school board must be uploaded as part of your application, in the TVO ILC Portal. For reference, a sample of what that letter will look like can be found in Appendix C l’Annexe C .

First Nations, Métis and Inuit applicants
  • Voluntary Indigenous Self-Identification

  • Option to indicate on your application that you are an Indigenous person of First Nations (Status/Non-Status), Métis or Inuit ancestry
  • Option to provide supporting documentation. We do NOT require government documents or any other official documentation indicating Indigenous ancestry.
Applicants claiming Canadian Military Status
  • Official proof of military status
  • CF1 Card or Canadian Forces Certificate of Service.

After submitting your documents you will immediately have access to the courses you have purchased from the ILC Portal.

Complete these 5 steps to get started and move towards your chosen goals. Note that you will only choose courses after we have confirmed your application.

Wait for confirmation of your application review and transcript assessment.

A TVO ILC guidance counsellor will review your academic record. Once your application is approved, you will receive an email notification.

Choose your courses and get started!

Upon receipt of email confirmation, log into the TVO ILC Portal and choose your courses.

The CAEC is for adults who do not have a high school diploma but need an education credential to open new doors to educational, training or employment opportunities. As with the GED®, Ontario candidates who successfully complete the CAEC will get an Ontario High School Equivalency Certificate. Learn more.

To register to write the CAEC assessment, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

Upload your supporting documentation

Provide two forms of valid government-issued identification (ID), two primary or a primary and a secondary. The primary form of ID must be government-issued and non-expired. It must also include the candidate’s name, date of birth, Ontario address, photo and signature.

  • Out of School Proof

    Students who are 18 years old and out of school for a minimum of 1 year must provide Out of School proof (Date of Leaving Letter) or a Homeschool Letter from your local school board.
